Stool #13: Stool made entirely of Black Cherry
June 2025: My first stool made entirely of Black Cherry
A couple years ago we had to take down a black cherry to make room for a new drain field for our sewer at the farm in northern Wisconsin. We sawed it into boards and dried it in the shed.
Some of these boards have both sapwood and heartwood. I like the contrast in colors in these two areas and wanted to make a stool that included both.
The boards also contain some of the discoloration that comes from the blight. I like these imperfections and included this wood in the stool.
Saw setup to even up leg lengths after gluing.
With 8 legs, it is super important that all the legs are exactly the same length (or the stool will wobble. )
AND sawing the top end rather than the bottom makes a smooth surface for joining to the stool top.
This view shows how I trim each leg using the saw and the fence.
Notice on the right there is a guide block clanped against the fence. This allows me to guage the length without having the leg against the fence as I move it through the saw while holding it against the miter slide.
(If the leg rides against the fence as it goes through the saw it can bind and then all hell breaks loose.)
Sharing these stools with folks who appreciate nice wood.
Hopefully Jim will find a good use for this stool.
.. and Debi says I have too many of these around the house and need to get rid of some.
