Display Cabinet for Rolling Ball Clocks.
April 2024 - June 2024
I believe these Rolling Ball Clocks need a display cabinet that provides power, light, and some protection from the 'elements' (eg: dust, grime, and prying fingers).
Okay. Here is the end produce of a couple month's work. I have used spare pieces of wood that I have collected over the years. And some pieces that were contributed from friends.
Design requirements:
- 360 degree view.
- Top lighting.
- Self contained power (built in to base)
- Control with single power switch
- allow access front and back.
- Match design to clocks.
- Use recycled lumber pieces.

Some construction pictures (Base):
Base was framed with same Red Oak as the top. I only had enough of this left for three sides and part of the fourth. I filled in the gap with the switch plate. Sometimes necessity IS the mother of invention.
The bottom pannel is attached with 6 screws and gives access to the electrical equipment inside.
The top pannel is 3/4 particle board that came from an old shelving unit that I built in the 70's and have since upgraded to this: Click here to see these shelf units.

Cabinet top Construction notes:
The cabinet is made with recycled Red Oak. The top box is from the boards that were the frame of a very large bulletin board that was thrown away during a remodel project on campus. I have carried those pieces around for about 15 years and was happy to add them to this project.
the rest of the framing is from Red Oak harvested from my brothers woods in NW wisconsin. The splines are Black Walnut from a tree taken down here in Madison, Wi.
The tracks for the sliding plexiglass pannels (two pannels each -- front and back) were cut from Black Walnut and Red Oak scraps.
